PWS SALT CO.

Prince William Sound Salt Company

Creative Direction

Packaging

PWS Salt Co. makes premium finishing salts, harvested from deep, pristine Alaskan oceans off the gulf. And this calls for premium packaging design.

I developed the packaging concept - encapsulating the Prince William Sound serene spirit (Sound is a type of waterbody).

Below is the break-down of the process.

Product needs

THE WHAT

PWS Salt Co.'s products specialty lies in its rare deep-sea mineral purity, high-end quality and hand-harvesting in Whittier (unique Alaskan origin) makes them a special souvenir & lovely gifts.

Previous Packaging of their best-sellers

Old 1oz Jar Packaging.webp

1oz Jars pack challenges:

  1. Cannot see salt crystals without opening the box.

  2. Generic box with a label lacked premium look & feeling for gifting.

  3. Staff struggle to deal with loose confetti-like stuffing.

4oz Jars pack was their most gifted product, but felt more like a shipping box than an appealing gifting pack.

Packaging needs

THE WHAT NOW?

Without custom packaging, PWS was missing the vital "visual appeal" that immediately communicates its artisanal value & specialty, leaving a disconnect between the high-end product and the consumer’s perception of its worth of purchasing for self & more so for gifting.

The next step was to figure out the suitable packaging solution that would be giftable and fits the brand!

First step was to measure dimensions

Nature as inspiration

SCENIC, SERENE & SALTY

The brand being based on a physical location, it was a no-brainer to draw the art inspiration from the actual place and that's what I did.

Hopped on a glacier cruise to Prince William Sound from Whittier! - The deep blue waters meet the glacier covered mountains.  Luckily the weather and the sun were at their best behavior. The landscapes were so expansive, scenic and very blue and white.

I took a deep breath of the fresh air and serenity that came with it.

Time to design!

CAPTURING THE BEAUTY

Time to translate the landscape into vector designs to capture the essence of Prince William Sound. My main elements were - yes, white mountains, Alaskan ocean blues, dancing together in a flow of nature.

The glaciers running down the mountains met the sea at the foot and made them one.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT

This was one of my most pleasing packaging designs from 2025 and the client left their complements in writing & updated me later on their engagement & sales info.

Personally loved PWS's finishing salts so much that I had to gift them to my family & friends!

Client response: "Hi Abharan!
